Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: philo- comb. form, -patry comb. form.
Etymology: < philo- comb. form + -patry comb. form, after German Ortstreue (1949 in the source reviewed in quot. 1951). Compare slightly earlier philopatric adj., and also sympatry n. at sympatric adj. Derivatives and slightly later allopatry n.
Zoology.
Philopatric behaviour, esp. (also more fully natal philopatry) a tendency to return to the place of origin to breed; the extent to which an animal or species shows this behaviour.

1951 C. E. Huntington in Ecology 32 352/1 Ortstreue is the tendency of an animal to return to its birthplace or breeding place, particularly for breeding. The word ‘philopatry’ will be used as its English equivalent in this review.
