Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin philologus , -er suffix1; Greek ϕιλόλογος , -er suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin philologus or its etymon ancient Greek ϕιλόλογος (see philologue n.) + -er suffix1; compare -loger comb. form. Compare slightly later philologue n. and also philologist n.With use in sense 2 compare:1860 Trans. Philol. Soc. 7 44 Prof. Key also stated that at the first Meeting of this Society, in 1842, the members were about equally divided on the question, whether philologer (cf. astrologer, philosopher, astronomer, geographer, &c.) or philologist was the right form.
Now rare.
