Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French philodoxe; Greek ϕιλόδοξος.
Etymology: < French philodoxe (1595 in Middle French in the passage translated in quot. 1603 at main sense) and its etymon ancient Greek ϕιλόδοξος loving belief or opinion (Plato) < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + δόξα opinion, glory (see doxology n.).

A person who loves or vehemently propounds his or her own opinions; a dogmatic or argumentative person.Chiefly in translations of Montaigne.
