Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Probably also partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Greek ϕιλοδέσποτος ; philo- comb. form, despot n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < ancient Greek ϕιλοδέσποτος loving one's master < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + δεσπότης master (see despot n.). In sense 2 probably directly < philo- comb. form + despot n.
Obsolete. rare.
