Etymology: < post-classical Latin petechia (1589 or earlier) < Italian petecchia (a1512), further etymology uncertain, perhaps shortened < an unattested post-classical Latin diminutive formation (in -cula -cule suffix) < post-classical Latin impetic- , impetix (late 8th cent.), variant of classical Latin impetīgo impetigo n. Compare French pétéchie (1704; 1573 in an isolated attestation in Middle French as peteche).Compare earlier use of Italian petecchie, plural of petecchia, in an English context:1582 J. Hester tr. L. Fioravanti Compend. Rationall Secretes iii. xvii. 32 This is the true and perfect Unction, that helpeth Petecchie, a disease so called in the Italian.
Medicine.
A small, flat, red or purple spot caused by bleeding into the skin or other organ. Usually in plural. In early use also: †a disease characterized by such lesions; a petechial fever (obsolete).
