Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek πεταλώδης , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πεταλώδης leaf-like ( < πέταλον leaf (see petal n.) + -ώδης -ode comb. form1) + -ic suffix, after French pétalodé (A. P. de Candolle 1817, in Mém. de phys. et de chim. de la Société d'Arcueil 3 402). Compare petalody n.
