Etymology: Alteration of penta- comb. form, by analogy with tera- comb. form (representing 10¹², i.e. (10³)⁴) beside tetra- comb. form (representing 4). Compare exa- comb. form (representing 10¹⁸, i.e. (10³)⁶) beside hexa- comb. form (representing 5).

Used in the names of units of measurement to denote a factor of 10¹⁵ (one thousand million million; a quadrillion), as petabyte, petagram, petawatt, etc. Symbol P.
