Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Blackfoot. Partly a borrowing from Cree. Etymons: Blackfoot piikániwa; Cree pîkanowiyiniw.
Etymology: Partly < Blackfoot piikániwa Piegan, and partly < Plains Cree pîkanowiyiniw, piyêkanowiyiniw Piegan, lit. ‘muddy water people’ (referring to the Missouri River); the relation between the Blackfoot and Cree words is uncertain.The spelling preferred by the people themselves is Peigan, which is the official form used in Canada.
