Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pied adj.1, piping n.1
Etymology: < pied adj.1 + piping n.1, after Pied Piper n., with allusion to the way in which the charmed rats closely followed the piper in the story.The term was first used in print in a doctoral dissertation by J. R. Ross (see quot. 1967), who states that it was suggested to him by his supervisor Robin Lakoff.
Linguistics.
The placing of a preposition immediately before a relative or interrogative pronoun, rather than later in the clause.E.g. ‘To whom are you talking?’ as opposed to ‘Whom are you talking to?’
