Etymology: < pied adj.¹ + piping n.¹, after Pied Piper n., with allusion to the way in which the charmed rats closely followed the piper in the story.The term was first used in print in a doctoral dissertation by J. R. Ross (see quot. 1967), who states that it was suggested to him by his supervisor Robin Lakoff.
