Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕαίνειν , -on suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕαίνειν to cause to appear (see -phane comb. form) + -on suffix1, after phenotype n. Compare:1943 W. H. Camp & C. L. Gilly in Brittonia 4 335 (note) Phenon: ϕαίνω (to appear)—based upon the term phenotype, and here referring to the morphological likeness of the genetically disjunct segments of such a species.
Biology.
A group of organisms which is recognized simply on the basis of similarity of characteristics, regardless of any biological interaction or genetic relatedness; (in later use) spec. a grouping of organisms established by phenetics or numerical taxonomy.

1943 W. H. Camp & C. L. Gilly in Brittonia 4 335 Phenon: a species which is phenotypically homogeneous and whose individuals are sexually reproductive, but which is composed of intersterile segments.
