Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pēnsum.
Etymology: < classical Latin pēnsum quantity of wool to be spun, allotted piece of work, task, use as noun of neuter of pēnsus , past participle of pendere to weigh (see pense v.1). Compare German Pensum piece of work, allotted task (17th cent.). With sense ‘a piece of school work imposed as a punishment’) compare French pensum (1740; now rare).
Now rare.
A piece of work; a duty or allotted task; a school task or lesson to be prepared; (U.S.) a piece of schoolwork imposed as a punishment.
