Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Penstemon.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Penstemon, genus name (J. Mitchell 1748, in Acta Physico-Med. Acad. Caesareae Leopoldino-Carolinae Naturae Curiosorum 8 Apparently 214; also as specific epithet in form Pentstemon , Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 612), irregularly < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + στήμων warp, thread, taken in sense ‘stamen’ (see stamen n.). The plant was so named on account of its sterile fifth stamen in addition to the four fertile ones characteristic of the order.
Any plant of the genus Penstemon (family Scrophulariaceae), comprising herbaceous North American plants cultivated for their showy, tubular, two-lipped flowers, which have five stamens of which one is sterile. Also (in form Penstemon): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: C. C. Schmidel Icones Plantarum (1762) ii.
