Etymology: < Middle French, French pensionnaire, †pensionaire person who receives a pension (1323 in Old French), pupil in a boarding school (1579), person who boards in a lodging house (1596), junior member of the Comédie Française (1835) < pension pension n. + -aire -ary suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin pensionarius (see pensioner n.). Compare earlier pensionary n.1, pensioner n.Apparently reborrowed in late 18th cent. Not fully naturalized in English.
