Etymology: < Penobscot, the name of a river (also a bay, lake, town, and county) in the state of Maine < Eastern Abenaki pɑnáwɑhpskek where the rocks open out, the name of the region of Verona Island and Orland in Maine, and of the Abenaki village at Orland. New Eng. 8 The principall habitation Northward we were at, was Pennobscot:..though most [Indian peoples] be Lords of themselues, yet they hold the Bashabes of Pennobscot, the chiefe and greatest amongst them.
