Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: phallus n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < phallus n. + -oid suffix, originally after post-classical Latin phalloides phallus-like, used spec. of fungi (1686; subsequently as a specific epithet in scientific Latin) < ancient Greek ϕαλλός penis (see phallos n.) + post-classical Latin -oides -oid suffix. Compare French phalloïde (1823 with reference to stalactites; 1842 with reference to the toadstool Amanita phalloides : see phalloidin n.).
