Etymology: < classical Latin phalera bright metal disc or boss worn on the chest as an ornament by men, or used to adorn the harness of horses, usually in plural, phalerae, also phalera (neuter plural) < ancient Greek ϕάλαρον, usually in plural, ϕάλαρα < ϕάλος metal part of a helmet, of uncertain origin + -ρος, suffix forming nouns. Compare Middle French, French phalère (1522), Spanish falera (1490), Italian falera (a1498).

Esp. in ancient Greece and Rome: a bright metal disc or boss worn on the chest as an ornament by men, or used to adorn the harness of horses.
