Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: peri- prefix, -gynous comb. form.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + -gynous comb. form, after scientific Latin perigyna (A. L. de Jussieu Genera plantarum (1789) p. xiii).
Botany.
Situated around the ovary; spec. (of stamens) inserted (together with the petals and sepals) around, rather than above or below, the ovary, i.e. on the rim of the receptacle of a superior ovary. Also: (of a flower) having the perianth and stamens so placed; (of a plant or group of plants) having such flowers. Contrasted with epigynous adj., hypogynous adj.
