Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perigonium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin perigonium (J. Hedwig Descriptio muscorum frondosorum (1788) I. Pref. sig. d 2) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek γόνος offspring, seed (see gono- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare perigon n.1Scientific Latin Perigonium was introduced by Hedwig for the floral envelopes generally, and also used by him especially of mosses; it was applied by F. Ehrhart ( Beiträge zur Naturkunde (1788) III. x. 123) to the floral envelopes in phanerogams.
