Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French percale.
Etymology: < French percale the name of a fabric originally imported from India (1701; 1666 as percallen ), probably ultimately < the source of percaulah n. Compare Catalan percal, percala (18th cent.), Spanish percal (1822), Portuguese percaes, plural (1720), Italian percalle (1811 as perkal, also rarely percallo), Dutch perkaal (mid 17th cent. as perkal, parkal).
