Etymology: < German Perbunan (1938) < per- (perhaps in permeabel permeable adj.) + Buna Buna n. + N , chemical symbol for nitrogen (see N n. 7).Perbunan was developed in Germany in the early 1930s as Buna-N. Compare:1938 Chem. Abstr. 32 3663 The mech. and elec. properties of Buna-S and Perbunan (formerly Buna-N,..),..are described... The elec. properties of both are excellent, and Buna-S is less permeable to water than are Perbunan and natural rubber.

A proprietary name for: a nitrile rubber first made in Germany.
