Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin peragrātiōn-, peragrātiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin peragrātiōn-, peragrātiō action of traversing a territory, in post-classical Latin also revolution of a celestial object (late 4th or early 5th cent.; after ancient Greek περίοδος ) < classical Latin peragrāt- , past participial stem of peragrāre peragrate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. In quot. 1561 at sense 1 after Spanish †peragración (1495). Compare French péragration (1611 in Cotgrave as peragration ; compare sense 2).
1. Astronomy. The action of completing a circuit of the zodiac; an instance of this. Chiefly in month of peragration n. a lunar month reckoned as the interval between successive returns of the moon to the same point of the zodiac; a sidereal month. Obsolete.
