Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: penny n., farthing n.
Etymology: < penny n. + farthing n., after penny farthing denoting the sum of 1¼ pence; the bicycle (sense B.) was so called on account of the resemblance of the large and small wheels to a penny and a farthing respectively.
