Etymology: < (i) Middle French perforatif boring, piercing (1362–5; French †perforatif ) and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin perforativus having the quality of perforating (a1250, c1270, c1320 in British sources), resulting from perforation (1363 in Chauliac) < classical Latin perforāt- , past participial stem of perforāre perforate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Old Occitan, Occitan perforatiu (c1350), Spanish perforativo (1493).
