Etymology: < pen- (in penis n.) + -iform comb. form, originally after German penisartig (1874 in the passage translated in quot. 1875). Compare scientific Latin peniformis (1813 or earlier as a specific epithet), Spanish peniforme (1895 or earlier), Portuguese peniforme (1858).
