Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Penicillium, pēnicillus, -ium.
Etymology: In sense 1 < scientific Latin Penicillium, genus name (H. F. Link 1809, in Magazin der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin 3 16) < classical Latin pēnicillus pencil n. + -ium (see -y suffix4). In sense 2 probably independently < classical Latin pēnicillus + -ium. With sense 1 compare French pénicillium (dated 1860 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986); earlier as †pénicillion (1817); now usually pénicille (1874 in this sense)). With sense 2 compare earlier pencil n. 5, penicil n. 2, penicillus n. 2.
1. Mycology. A genus of ascomycetous fungi, including various species causing mould on foodstuffs and storage rots of fruits, and several used commercially in the manufacture of antibiotics and of cheese; (also penicillium) a fungus of this genus.
