1. Any of several kinds of spicy or pungently aromatic wood; esp. that of the California laurel, Umbellularia californica (family Lauraceae), of California and Oregon. Obsolete.

(a) any of the lauraceous trees Umbellularia californica of California, Cinnamomum laubatii of Queensland, and Dicypellium caryophyllaceum and Licaria guianensis of tropical America; (b) U.S. either of the prickly ashes, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis and Z. americanum (family Rutaceae); (c) New Zealand the horopito, Pseudowintera axillaris (family Winteraceae).
