释义

pendulineadj.n.

Brit. /ˈpɛndjᵿlʌɪn/, /ˈpɛndʒᵿlʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈpɛndʒəl(ə)n/, /ˈpɛndjəl(ə)n/
Origin: A borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymon: French penduline.
Etymology: < French penduline, noun (1778 in Buffon Hist. naturelle des oiseaux V. 434)), either from classical Latin pendulus (see pendulous adj.) + -ine -ine suffix1, or < French pendule pendule n. + -ine -ine suffix1. In sense A. 1 perhaps after scientific Latin pendulinus, specific name (in Motacilla pendulinus) (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 189). Perhaps compare Italian pendolina (1598 in an apparently isolated attestation in Florio as the name of an unspecified bird).
