Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pendulus , -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin pendulus hanging down (see pendulous adj.) + -ant suffix1. Compare Italian pendolante hanging down (1598 or earlier; participle of pendolare used as adjective: see pendulate v.). Compare earlier pendulent adj. Compare also earlier pendent adj., pendular adj.1, pendulous adj., and later pendulate v.
