Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh pendragon.
Etymology: < Welsh pendragon chief leader in war (12th cent.) < pen head (see pen n.1) + dragon warrior, dragon < classical Latin dracōn- , dracō snake, the standard of a cohort (see dragon n.1).Compare post-classical Latin insularis draco (6th cent.), used by Gildas to address Maglocunus (Maelgwn), ruler of Gwynedd.
An ancient British or Welsh ruler holding or claiming supreme power. Chiefly as a title.Known in English principally as the title of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur according to legend.
