Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pheno- comb. form, copy n.
Etymology: < pheno- comb. form + copy n., after German Phänokopie (R. Goldschmidt 1935, in Zeitschr. f. induktive Abstammungs- u. Vererbungslehre 69 46). Compare phenotype n.
Biology.
An individual showing features which are characteristic of a genotype other than its own (esp. of a particular abnormal mutant), but have been produced environmentally rather than genetically.
