Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕοῖνιξ , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕοῖνιξ dark red (see Phoenician n. and adj.) + -in suffix1. In sense 2 after French phœnicine (E.-A.-H. Friedheim 1933, in Comptes rendus Soc. de Biol. 112 1031), itself after scientific Latin phoeniceum, specific epithet (compare quot. 1933 at sense 2).
Chemistry.
1. A colouring matter produced by the action of nitrosulphuric acid on phenol; indigo-carmine. Obsolete.
