Etymology: < German Phenakit (attributed to N. Nordenskiöld in Jahres-Bericht über die Fortschritte der physischen Wissensch. 13 (1834) 157) < ancient Greek ϕένακ- , ϕέναξ cheat (of uncertain origin: see note) + German -it -ite suffix¹, so called on account of its having been mistaken for quartz.It has been plausibly suggested that ancient Greek ϕέναξ represents a popular pronunciation of ϕαίναξ (only attested as a proper name) < ϕαίνεσθαι to appear (see -phane comb. form); the suffix -ακ- is characteristic of familiar words.

Mineralogy.

A rare mineral of the trigonal system consisting of beryllium silicate, Be₂SiO₄, and occurring as colourless or white scales and prisms.
