Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek περίπατος.

Etymology: < ancient Greek περίπατος act of walking about, walk, covered walk, in Hellenistic Greek also school of philosophy, originally applied to the Academy of Plato, who engaged in philosophical discourse whilst walking about < περι- peri- prefix + πάτος way, path (see found v.¹). Compare peripatetic n., peripatetic adj., and later peripatus n.¹Aristotle and his followers were referred to in Hellenistic Greek as οἱ ἀπὸ τοῦ Περιπάτου or οἱ ἐκ τοῦ Περιπάτου (ϕιλόσοϕοι) those (philosophers) from or out of the Peripatos, as Aristotle was a pupil of Plato. In form peripaton after the Greek accusative singular.
