Etymology: < post-classical Latin pendiculum hanging ornament, tassel (1374, 1411 in British sources), hook, handle (from 14th cent. in continental sources), curtain (mid 15th cent. in a continental source), land or building that is a dependent part of an estate (frequently 1481–1573 in Scottish sources) < classical Latin pendēre to hang (see pend v.3) + -culum -cule suffix; compare -cle suffix.
