Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French périgée.
Etymology: < Middle French, French périgée (1557 as perigee ) < post-classical Latin perigeum perigeum n. Compare apogee n.
1. Astronomy and Astronautics. The point in the orbit of the moon, an artificial satellite, etc., at which it is nearest to the earth. Cf. perigeum n. 1. Opposed to apogee n. 1.In the Ptolemaic (geocentric) system also applicable to the planets and the sun when they are at their nearest point to earth.
