Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Peridinium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Peridinium, genus name (C. G. Ehrenberg Organisation, Systematik u. geographisches Verhältniss der Infusionsthierchen (1832) ii. 74/2; < Hellenistic Greek περιδινής whirled round ( < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + δίνη circular motion, something which rotates or whirls round (of uncertain origin); compare ancient Greek περιδινεῖν to whirl round) + scientific Latin -ium : see -y suffix4) + -an suffix. Compare French péridiniens, plural noun (1841), German Peridinien, plural noun (1866 or earlier).In form peridiniean (see quot. 1935 at sense B.) after scientific Latin Peridinieae, class name (1895 or earlier).
