Etymology: < peri- prefix + -dermis (in epidermis n.). In sense 1 after German Periderma (C. R. Hüttenschmidt Untersuchungen über die Entwicklung des Korkes und der Borke (1836) 17) or French périderme (H. Mohl 1838, in Ann. sci. nat. (bot.) 9 303, translating Hüttenschmidt). Compare periderm n.Mohl presided at Hüttenschmidt's dissertation. Lindley's attribution of Peridermis to Mohl (see quot. 1839 at sense 1) appears to be inaccurate.
