Etymology: < French péricycle (P. van Tieghem 1882, in Bull. de la Soc. Bot. 29 280) < Hellenistic Greek περίκυκλος all round, spherical (also περίκυκλῳ round about, in ancient Greek as two words, περὶ κύκλῳ ) < περι- peri- prefix + κύκλος cycle n.¹ (compare ancient Greek περικυκλοῦν to encircle). Compare earlier pericambium n.

Botany.

Originally: a layer of non-vascular tissue between the vascular cylinder and the cortex. Later: spec. the outermost, non-vascular layer of the vascular cylinder of a root, immediately below the endodermis. Formerly called pericambium.
