Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French péréquation.
Etymology: < French péréquation (1442 in Middle French) < classical Latin peraequātiōn- , peraequātiō state of being equal < peraequāt- , past participial stem of peraequāre to make equal ( < per- per- prefix + aequāre equate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Italian perequazione (1607).
rare before late 19th cent.
The action of making equal; spec. the addition of an amount to one price or cost to make it equal to another. Also occasionally: a state of equality or fairness.
