Etymology: < the plural of penny n. (see γ forms s.v. penny n. Forms 2.).Pence occurs earlier as singular with plural pences as the second element of compounds denoting coins, e.g. a ninepence , ninepences (see ninepence n., etc.). Plurals of this kind occasionally occur with compounds denoting coins of the post-1971 U.K. decimal currency, e.g.1973 Daily Tel. 24 Oct. 16 A customer asked for some small change but the shopkeeper was unable to oblige as she was very short of ‘two pences and one pences’. Pences also occasionally occurs earlier as a ‘double’ plural form of penny : see δ forms s.v. penny n. A. 2.
