Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh penbardd.
Etymology: < Welsh penbardd (1733) < pen head, chief (see pen n.1) + bardd bard n.1Forms in -bard are probably after bard n.1 The earlier Welsh term is pencerdd (12th cent.); compare quot. 1778. The modern term may have been inspired by a 14th-cent. Welsh reference to Taliesin as pen beirdd chief of the bards.
Now archaic or historical.
