Etymology: < Spanish pepita (c1590 in this sense), specific use of pepita seed, kernel (1381–1418; attested earlier in sense ‘respiratory disease of birds’ (1330–43): see pip n.¹, and compare pippin n.). With the forms pepit, pepite perhaps compare French pépite naturally occurring lump or nugget of gold (1714).
