Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin accentor, Accentor.
Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin accentor person who sings with another (a636 in Isidore) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + cantor cantor n.1 In sense 2 < scientific Latin Accentor, former genus name ( J. M. Bechstein Getreue Abbildungen naturhistorischer Gegenstände (1795) 47), specific use of post-classical Latin accentor.Although quot. 1817 mentions the German biologist B. Meyer as coiner of the genus name, this is not the case.
1. Music. A person who performs the treble part in a trio or choir. Cf. incentor n. 2, succentor n. 1b. Obsolete.
