Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pelure d'oignon.
Etymology: < French pelure d'oignon, literally ‘onion skin’ (although this is apparently first attested slightly later in the relevant sense: 1875 or earlier in vin pelure d'oignon denoting a wine of a pale tawny colour, 1932 or earlier denoting a colour resembling that of onion skins, 1948 or earlier denoting a wine of this colour) < pelure skin (see pelure n.1) + de de prep. + oignon onion n.1
A pale tawny colour, esp. as the characteristic colour of some aged red wines; a wine of this colour, esp. one produced in the Jura region of France.
