Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: peri- prefix, chaeta n., -ous suffix.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + chaeta n. + -ous suffix. Compare scientific Latin Perichaeta , genus name (L. K. Schmarda Neue Turbellarien, Rotatorien u. Anneliden (1861) I. ii. 13) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek χαίτη long hair, taken in sense ‘bristle’ (see chaeta n.).
Zoology. Now rare.
