Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pelouse.
Etymology: < French pelouse lawn (1582), public enclosure at a racecourse (1880 or earlier), probably < Occitan pelouso lawn, use as noun of feminine of pelous (Old Occitan pelos ) hairy < classical Latin pilōsus hairy (see pilous adj.).
Chiefly in French contexts.
