Etymology: < pelo- comb. form + -phile comb. form, probably after French pélophile (J. Thurmann Essai de phytostatique (1849) I. xiii. 268). Compare earlier pelophilous adj.
Ecology. rare.
A plant or animal which grows or thrives on clay or mud. Also as adj.: = pelophilous adj.
