Wagler Natürliches System der Amphibien (1830) 136; < pelo- pelo- comb. form + ancient Greek μέδουσα , feminine present participle of μέδειν to protect, rule, perhaps in allusion to the mythological name: see Medusa n.) + -idae (see -id suffix³).
