Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pellūcidus, perlūcidus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pellūcidus (also, more commonly, perlūcidus) transparent, clearly intelligible < per- per- prefix + lūcidus lucid adj. Compare Middle French, French pellucide (1575). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin pellucidum (neuter) transparent substance (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian). Compare later perlucid adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pĕliū·sid) /pəˈl(j)uːsɪd/.
