Jrnl. 2 318)) < penta- penta- comb. form + ancient Greek τρῆμα hole, aperture (see trematode adj. and n.) + scientific Latin -ites -ite suffix¹, with omission of the second syllable, -ta-.The plural form, when printed in italics with a capital initial, could often alternatively be intrepreted as showing the genus name Pentremites. Cent. Dict. records the word as pentatremite, probably after scientific Latin †Pentatremites, an emended form of the genus name (G. Sandburger 1842, in Neues Jahrb. f. Mineral. 396), after Pentatrematites (G. B. Sowerby 1828, in Zool. Jrnl. 4 89).
